Chicago turns to 100% renewable energy

Chicago is celebrating a huge milestone. All 411 of its municipal buildings, including international airports and libraries, are powered by renewable energy.

But where is this renewable energy coming from?

Roughly 70% of the power comes from a new 4,100-acre solar farm, with the remaining 30% purchased from renewable energy credits.

This transition into 100% renewable energy is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 290,000 metric tons per year, which is the equivalent of removing 62,000 cars from the road — a huge feat for one of America’s largest cities.

Renewable energy has opened new job options and opportunities for Chicago residents.

Chicago hopes to inspire other cities to take action and join them on their mission toward climate action.
